As a first step, a network of Akshaya e-kendras is being set up across Kerala. Run by entrepreneurs, each kendra will be a self-sustaining unit with the e-literacy programme assuring baseline revenue. Akshaya e-kendras are being set up within 2 kilometer of every household. Around 3000 Akshaya Centres will be developed once the roll out is completed through out the state. Each centre will cater to approximately 1200 - 1500 households and all these will be networked to become Multi-purpose Community Information Centres. Development of these centres will provide direct sustained employment to
at least 15,000 people (5 Nos. per Akshaya centre) in the IT sector.
Malappuram, one of the districts in northern Kerala was selected for implementing the pilot of this prestigious project. Malappuram, which is the district with largest population and which has contributed to the growth history of the state,
turned out to be the ideal location for pilot implementation. A total of over 600 Akshaya centres have been put in place to cover the entire 3550 square kilometers & support over 6,00,000 households of the district.
