Project Status

The pilot project was kicked-off in May 2003 in Malappuram District, with the launching of over 600 Akshaya e-kendras. These centres have offered the e-literacy programme to the families assigned to them. As on date, over 6 lakh citizens have completed the e-literacy programme. Thus the district has become the first e-literate district in the country

The Akshaya e-kendras are now developing modules for advanced e-learning, computer training etc. based on the overwhelming response from the neo literates and due to wide spread demand for advanced training packages.

In the second phase of implementation of the project, these kendras shall provide the front end for Government service delivery and will be the hub for many services like disbursement of application forms, payment collection, e-commerce, e-courier, audio-video-CD libraries etc.

The Government of Kerala has announced Akshaya as a priority project, and has decided to replicate the project in all the other districts of the state
